Our History

Diamond Grove Baptist Church History

It was on December 4, 1877, that the dream of Diamond Grove Baptist Church became a reality for Nelson Moss and Oliver Wyche. They accepted the trusteeship of the land from J.C. Robinson, who donated the property where our present church stands. It had been located across the road from its present location. A countless number of faithful members have assisted the church in its growth and progress, many who have been called from labor to reward.

Much of our history has gone to reward with the laborers. What we know we want to keep close to our hearts just as we do our memories of the faithful gone on ahead. Reverends Daniel Dillard in 1890 and James M. Chapell to follow were the earliest recorded ministers. Reverend Walter Blow served from 1915-1918 and Reverend William H. Wiggins led our church from 1918-1927.

In 1928, Reverend Amos A. Bell was called a pastor until his death in 1938. It was during this time the Senior Choir was organized with music provided by Mammie Carpenter. To follow in the pulpit was Reverend C. C. Sharpe who will long be remembered for his dynamic sermons and talented gospel singing.

It was during the years from 1950-1960, under the ministry of Reverend Fitzgerald, that we witnessed the change from wood to a brick structure. Many major changes continued under the direction of our former pastor, Reverend Abraham I. Walton Sr. from 1960-2011. He led growth through his abilities as an organizer, educator, counselor, leader and lover of our Lord, as evidenced through his willing of souls for Christ. After such a long, spiritually enriched history with our pastor, Rev. Abraham I. Walton, Sr., sadly on July 30, 2011, he finished his earthly journey and went home to be with the Lord. He is sorely missed.

The Diamond Grove Baptist Church's latest chapter includes (as of January 2013) Reverend Charles L. Jones, Pastor, from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina by way of Washington D.C.
